Sewer Problems

Sewer line problems in Naperville – their causes and solutions.

Older Naperville neighborhoods are often plagued with sewer line problems. The cause is usually the failure of the mortar which joins the old sections of pipes together. This mortar failure happens across the board throughout the neighborhood because the lines were all laid at about the same time.  The material for the old sewers was clay pipe which was joined by mortar. After time the mortar breaks down leaving an opening for water to escape the pipe and tree roots (which sense the wet ground around the pipe) enter the sewer line.  As Naperville trees mature their roots go many feet beyond the diameter of the tree but only about 3ft down into the ground unless they sense water farther down.

Sewer line breaks can happen as the house settles over time and the pipe in the ground stays put and the house does not. Tree roots can also break or rupture the sewer pipe as they grow larger within the sewerline. Digging in to install landscaping or underground cable can also cause a break in the pipe.

Repair methods differ for different situations but I will list a few options so you know what they are.

Sewer rodding or rootering is done to remove a stoppage in the line. A heavy cable with cutting head attached to the end is used to cut through whatever may be in the sewer line.  This job takes muscle to push & turn the cable in the line. The debris is many times pulled back out of the sewer where the cable entered the line. Debris that is most often cleaned out is feminine products, wipes, tissue and paper towels.  Grease is a big problem for interior pipes as well as sewer lines.

Sewer Jetting is done with a machine that compresses the water.  The jetter also has a long cable with a cutting head and also water nozzles.  The strong water pressure cuts through solids and grease and washes it down the line into larger sewer lines. This is used for commercial applications where grease, sludge, sand and mineral deposits are an issue.  Many commercial buildings have maintenace plans which include yearly jettings.

Sewer line repairs are made when one section of the pipe needs fixing but the rest of the pipe’s integrity is intact.

Sewer line replacement is done when there are several breaks or most of the pipe is in need of repair. Sewer lines can be dug by hand or by large equipment which can be messy and time consuming.  The newest technology for sewer line repairs is a complete Sewer Relining which can be done quickly with the right equipment. This method is less destructive to your yard and is better than the old standard of digging up the line. Relining leaves a pipe inside your old broken pipe which is seamless and strong just like a new pipe.  Pipe relining is approved by the city of Naperville. The Scottush Plumber does pipe relining.

Pipe Bursting is not allowed by city of Naperville area.
